Short Plays, Big Stories

Saturday 28 September at 3:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
£8.00 – £10.00

Short Plays, Big Stories brings an exciting evening of original new writing to the Wanstead Fringe. From the provocative to the nostalgic to the experimental, this collection of fresh theatrical voices promises to delight and challenge audiences in equal measure. Expect to be transported back in time, revisit familiar myths, grapple with contemporary quandaries, and consider new ways of seeing the world. We’re asking big questions in innovative ways while celebrating emerging local playwrights, and we’d love for you to join us.

Featuring:

——-

The Old Dagger, presented in collaboration with Duck and Dive Theatre, written by Jack McKee and Collette Hodson, featuring Poppy Janisch and Alistair Mumford.

In a beloved local boozer, shadows of Macbeth emerge as the landlord grapples with gentrification’s grip, fighting to preserve the heart of his community in a forgotten corner of Camden. Rooted in personal experiences, this play echoes the vanishing pulse of community pubs.

——-

She, written and performed by Emily Wollenberg.

At a time when conservative ideology warns of a growing outbreak of LGBTQ people, Shereminds us that queer people have always existed and loved. Transporting us back in time, this original new work illustrates the timelessness of attraction using captivating dance sequences and real queer love letters from history.

——-

Nigel No Mates vs the Evil Rectangle, written and performed by Lavan Jeyarupalingam.

In an age where technology has afforded us limitless connectivity while leaving us more isolated than ever, this fresh new work chronicles one man’s exploration of connectivity and friendship in the modern world, with authenticity and humour.

——-

Pandora Unboxed written and performed by Shea Donovan.

We find Pandora stuck in limbo, opening her box of evils for all eternity, and she’s absolutely sick of it. A contemporary reanimating of a tale as old as time, the piece uses poetry, mythology and physicality to explore the consequences of inherited shame and modern womanhood.

Content Warning: some loud noises, mental health, mature themes

Recommended for ages 16+

Indigo Arts Collective develops theatre and interdisciplinary performance at the intersection of art, scholarship and activism with a particular focus on elevating silenced voices from history. We’ve staged work around the globe, from London to Edinburgh and New York to Los Angeles, and are thrilled to be presenting this collection of new plays at home here in Wanstead.
