Wanstead Fringe Handwriting Competition

As part of this year’s Wanstead
Fringe, we’re inviting the primary school
children of Wanstead to pick up their best
pens and start writing, and show the rest
of us how excellent their handwriting is. They stand the chance to be named as Wanstead’s best handwriters and to win prizes for their school’s PTA.

Here’s what you need to know.

WHO CAN ENTER: All Wanstead primary school children up to year 6 as at 1 July 2022. They can enter either individually or through their school.

PRIZES: Will be awarded to the winning entrant’s school PTA, courtesy of our sponsor Petty Son & Prestwich

WHAT ENTRANTS HAVE TO DO: On one side of paper, in their best handwriting, copy out this poem.

The Crocodile by Lewis Carroll

How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!

HOW TO SUBMIT ENTRIES: Individual entries should be handed in at Petty Son & Prestwich’s office on Woodbine Place, Wanstead, by 31 July.

If you are entering individually, please include your name, age and school, as well as your parents/guardian’s contact details. Put these on the back of the paper, or on an attached slip.

If you are entering as a class, please put your name, class and school on the back of the sheet.

The winning entry/entries will be published online, along with the name of the entrant, their year and their school. Addresses will not be published. We hope to display the winners at the Wanstead Festival.

Entries made by school classes can be collected. Please email info@wansteadfringe.org if you need us to do this.

JUDGING: This will take place over the summer holidays. We will contact the winners, either individually or through their school. The judges’ decision will be final. The winners will be announced during Wanstead Fringe fortnight, which this year is running from 10 to 25 September.

QUESTIONS: You can contact us on info@wansteadfringe.org
